The finest of the Mediterranean diet is contained in this recipe – fresh ingredients, simple preparation and fullness of flavour. Ingredients can be found on majority of Adriatic islands, among them is also Lokrum, an island about 600 m away from Dubrovnik. Therefore enjoy the taste of fresh mussels and sauce to dip your bread. No utensils needed 😉
1 kg (2.20 lb) mussels
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 sprig basil
1 sprig parsley
3-4 cloves garlic
1 teaspoon sugar
100 ml (3.4 fl oz) red wine

Wash the mussels under running water, remove the strands and dry slightly.
In a wide and deep dish warm the olive oil and add chopped onion. Stew briefly until golden, then add chopped basil, parsley and pressed garlic. Mix briefly and pour lemon juice. Add pepper and sugar. Pour wine, boil for several minutes and add mussels.
Cook covered until all the mussels open. Shake the dish occasionally. Remove the mussels that did not open.
Serve warm with domestic bread.
